According to data from the General Administration of Customs, China's exports of Chapter 89 goods ("Ships and Floating Structures") showed a year-on-year upward trend over the five-year period from 2020 to 2024, with particularly significant growth observed between 2023 and 2024.
From January to October this year, China exported a total of 4,736 vessels, representing a year-on-year increase of 22.6%, with export value reaching USD 36.3 billion, up 72.5% from the previous year.
· Container ships: 275 vessels exported, a year-on-year increase of 87.1%, with export value reaching USD 14.7 billion, soaring by 91.9%.
· Bulk carriers: 496 vessels exported, marking a growth of 92.2%.
China exports such products to 85 countries and regions worldwide, with the majority concentrated in Asia, Africa, and Europe.Today, China can be regarded as a "versatile player" in the shipbuilding industry, boasting globally leading technology and comprehensive assembly and construction capabilities across the entire spectrum of marine products. The country is now capable of building all types of vessels, including the most technically demanding projects that represent the pinnacle of the shipbuilding industry—such as large-scale cruise ships, massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, and even aircraft carriers. The high-quality and advanced vessels produced have attracted increasing orders from international trade clients.
In the field of green-powered vessels, China has achieved rapid development and earned significant international recognition.
In 2023, China's market share of new green ship orders reached 57% globally, and this figure has already surpassed 70% in the current year. Statistics show that over 80% of global trade is conducted via maritime shipping. In recent years, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented stringent environmental regulations, mandating the adoption of more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies and fuels in ships. The ultimate goal is to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions in international shipping. These regulations are driving the global shipping industry toward green and low-carbon transformation, resulting in a growing demand for green vessels among shipowners.
Additionally, data from the shipping brokerage firm Clarksons indicates that the average age of the global fleet approached 14 years at the end of last year, signaling an imminent peak in ship renewal and replacement. This trend is expected to further expand the export market potential for Chinese vessels.
